In this paper I will survey my own life from a sociologist perspective. I will see at my place as a person in society and carry a sociological look at my future founded on Mills’ concept of the sociological imagination. In order to efficaciously due this, I use 3 concepts such as my class background, cultural capital and socialization.
To refer this to my own life, I may attempt to find myself within my time and class background. The fact that I come from a middle-class suburb tells a lot about where I will be in twenty years or so. It is also symptomatic of what is hoped from me. In particular, my childhood was surrounded by good cars and convenient living situations. I had no problems with police and the law. This affects my liveliness as a kid. A commonplace example of this would be the kid from the ghetto who plays life-appropriate games like “cops and robbers” and the suburban kid (me) alternatively played mind-stimulating games like chess. In addition, as a teenager, I was largely concerned on getting good grades and getting into a respected college.
My family also gave me advantage in teaching how to fit into the foremost culture, by instilling in me principles, standards of behavior, beliefs, language, as well as vocabulary that permits me to decode society. These information make up what sociologists describe as cultural capital. Cultural capital gives me an understanding of how to cooperate and communicate with people around me. Studying about culture, the totality of studied social transmitted behaviors, through lived events has permitted me to study the norms of society that permit me to be successful. One social norm is going to school to get a knowledge; so I attended school and was able to make fine enough grades to go into college.
Another concept is socialization. The socialization is how we acquire a knowledge how to act (perform the roles) or to pursue norms (assigned to each status), as well as to what to trust. Agents of socialization are those folks and situations/events that learn us how to perform and also shape your personality. The first agent of socialization is my relatives, the social institution that protects their members. This category is what sociologists describe as a primary group, because they are the first group that I meet in life and also the one that I have the powerful emotional attachments to. They instilled in me optimistic feelings of self or what sociologists would describe as self-esteem. One way they assisted me expand this was to point out what I do good and are not so difficult on me when I do something wrong.
This essay explain my social characteristics through the sociological imagination, this has been a short but interesting analysis of my life. In this paper I had to use my sociological imagination which shows me a frame to comprehend how I fit into the social structure and how social impacts affect my life by revealing me advantages as well as limiting me. Doing this essay has really gave me conscious of just how much we are not islands unto ourselves.
