Tom Wingfield is an amazing character. Tom is not only a seemingly objective narrator of the play, but also a very emotively driven character as well. This does the reader unable to know for sure if his outlook is reliable. In spite of it is clear that Tom cares for his mother and sister, he is frequently impartial and even cruel toward them. Tom does not want that Laura should to be more public and welcoming to new experiences and not so limited within her own world, and he does not accept she is worthy for the outside world, or that it would appreciate her. In scene Five this is demonstrated for instance, when Amanda and Tom talk about Laura.
“Tom: Laura is very different from other girls.
Amanda: I think the difference is all to her advantage.
Tom: Not quite all – in the eyes of others – strangers – she’s terribly shy and lives in a world of her own and those things make her seem a little peculiar to people outside the house.” (Tennessee)
Amanda Wingfield lives in a world that fluctuates between delusion and reality. In scene Five this is demonstrated in scene waiting for Jim O’Connor. She uses different escape mechanisms in order to bear her present position in life. Despite the lessons from Amanda’s own inauspicious marriage, Amanda imagines that her daughter will be the princess of a Cinderella story. Jim O’Connor is expected to be the prince in Amanda’s desires who rescues Laura and supplies her with a happy ending when she asks Laura to want on the “little silver slipper of a moon” (Tennessee), her explanation of the moon is a reference to Cinderella.

The emotively and physically handicapped Laura is the only person in “The Glass menagerie” who never does anything to upset somebody. Despite the weight of her own problems, she displays a trust in people, even when somebody does not believe in herself —as depicted by Tom in scene Five—that stands in utterly contrast to the egoism and grudging offerings that describe the Wingfield household.
