Ever since I can remember, I was very interested with science and inventions. I recall when I was 6, I was determined to build a robot out of old cardboard boxes and a radio. Later, when I was 9, I was just shocked to know that we share 99 percent of our DNA with chimpanzees. One of the experiments I was not so proud of involved me attempting to discover how many bowls of Caption Crunch I could eat without getting sick. Nevertheless, I’d like to think my experiments have gotten better.

After this summer, I will have officially completed my first associate degree at Portland Community College, and this is only the start of my academic journey. Furthermore, I believe what interests me the most, is people and social structures. I am really determined to do what I can to make a change in the world, even if it is a small change. I intend to fight for human rights for as long as I can, and this is what drives me the most. I can still hear my mother’s response to her inappropriate behavior.  “This is just the way I was brought up”; still her favorite response, as if it excuses any of her previous comments rooted is racism. But then again, she was indeed brought up in a different era, yet refuses to adapt to the new era she lives in. This behavior is a reminder of the amount of racism, sexism, and hate that still resides in our country. Therefore, I feel that I want to dedicate my life to helping the millions of American who still have to deal with such discrimination and prejudice up to this day.

This degree will give me the opportunity to continue pursuing my dreams and move one step closer towards my life goals. Additionally, with a well-rounded academic background, I will be better equipped to serve people who are in need and educate others who can contribute as well. On top of that, I am interested in pursuing a degree in either sociology or political science, as I feel that both these degrees will offer me a good understanding of the topics and fields I am interested in. Nevertheless, I hope to not only complete my degree, but to also gain a better understanding of the world around me and the various ways I can make that world a better place for everyone.
