A book review represents a critical analysis and evaluation of its quality and meaning, where the author’s intent and the extent to which he has managed to express this intent is highlighted. In fact, there is no single way to review a book. Reviews are personal exhibits that reflect the reviewer’s views.
In any case, the goal of a good review must be to encourage reflection arising from the events told in a book.
Literary reviews are often read online which are nothing more than a brief summary of the events that take place in the book. A good review must have characteristics that entice the reader to go to the bookstore and buy the novel.
It is necessary to tell the plot without revealing the ending, to provide the reader with interpretative elements that analyze the arguments in relation to the context of the book and to provide evaluative elements that give an overall judgment on the work.
The reviewer’s opinion comes out already from the cut with which the book is described, from the citations that are selected, from the very choice of the book to review, therefore, since every text that is written already speaks of the author who wrote it , a good review should in any case tend towards objectivity: in other words, it is a question of bringing out one’s own judgment, without declarations such as “I recommend you to read this book”.
Read the book
Review comes from the Latin verb “recènseo”, which means to examine, to review. For this reason, the first step is obviously to read carefully the book you intend to review, possibly re-reading it if you have read it a long time ago.
While reading, it can be useful to take notes: the notes help to better remember all the thoughts raised by reading the book. Write down the sentences that strike us: it does not necessarily have to be something that has been said directly by a character, on the contrary, it could simply be a passage in the book that supports a theme or thesis, or that represents the author’s style well .
To write a good review that invites the reader to read, it is very useful to mention the context in which the book was read: the passion for reading is inevitably linked to everyday life, and when a book involves us considerably, often it is the sensations we try that remain impressed, rather than the events told.
