Design for Manufacture

Design for Manufacture based on the design brief provided as the basis for the coursework of this module (Appendix I of this document). The student(s) will re-design the product submitted last time the module was taken. For the student to pass this resit, it is imperative that: 1) the new design addresses all issues/recommendations highlighted in the feedback received last time the student took the module (this include the feedback provided during the oral presentation and in the written report). 2) Particularly if it has been more than one year since the student took the module last time, the student should visit the module’s Study Direct site and go through the different sections, get clearly acquainted with the module’s content and learning outcomes.
In case the student withdrew early in the term last time the module was taken, then the student should treat the brief as if doing a new design rather than a re-design.

Deliverables:
The deliverables for this assignment are:
1. – A 42 x 59.4cm (A2) printed poster following the template provided last time the module was taken.
2.- A Technical Report (4500 words min.), carefully following the directions provided in the template for such report that was provided last time the student took the module.
Notice:
All deliverables must be submitted to the School Office on or before the deadline specified on the student timetable on Sussex Direct (typical penalties for late submissions will apply).
Appendix II (Design Brief)
1.1 Brief
Applying knowledge of principles, methodologies and techniques of the best practice known as ‘Design for Manufacture,’ the student will re-design a commercial product (free choice) following the constraints outlined below, with the aim of improving its design (for manufacture).
The design project is divided in two parts:
Part 1: Analysis of the product:
For the first part of the project students will purchase a commercial product. Students will proceed to study the product in terms of Design for Manufacture, this procedure will require that the product is dismantled.
Part 2: Re-design of the product:
During the second stage of the project students will re-design the product previously studied with the intention to improve its design in terms of manufacturing. This re-design should be based on what the students have learned about the product after studying it as well as on their knowledge about Design for Manufacture acquired in the module.
Limitations/Constraints of the product to be acquired/re-designed:
Must be purchased new
Retail cost must be between £15 and £20
Must be made of at least two different material families (i.e., metal and plastic. Excluding PCBs and/or off-the-shelf components).
Must feature labels/graphics
Must be made of at least 4 different parts (excluding any off-the-shelf parts) Must have a moving part and/or a part that can be taken off (for use)
Must be electric/electronic (power source does not need to reside in the product) (Product Design Students or Mixed Groups Only) Must be a ‘consumer’ product
