In Sundiata, one’s character and peculiarity arise as one performs destiny, favorable or unfavorable. Sundiata’s father consents Sogolon as his wife, despite her odd, disgraceful semblance, because she will be mother to the future king. Sundiata accepts the burdens of changing himself into the destined hero and captain, using animistic miraculous forces and following Allah’s will of Allah to distinction natural law and recognition. Those who dispute or try to modify destiny to fit their own pride, for example Sassouma Berete, fail unhappy, defeated by the forces substantiating Sundiata.
The Epic of Sundiata is senseless without the idea of fate and destiny. When the Mandinka king admits the divine hunter at the royal court, and the hunter forecasts that the king\s wedding to an ugly woman would give him a powerful king for a son the Mandinka king must respect the prophecy. It is for this sense that the king, before his death, grants to Sundiata – his son born of an ugly woman – a griot. The only helpful part about the prophecy was that the king gave Sundiata with a griot because he knew that Sundiata would be a significant king in the future. When Sundiata is older, he also trusts in the significance of harnessing forces of a powerful nature. Further, fate and destiny reveal real the Mandinka people, which is the sense why the prophecy is honored by the king. But, even if most of the Mandinka people do not believe in supernatural forces, the belief system of the king is hoped to be excellent to that people. Conviction in prophecy entails that one’s fate is decided, and there is nothing that one can do to transform his or her fate. Prophets are trusted because they know the destiny and fate of others. By informing people about their conformable fates and destinies, they save their people from being delusive.
