How to avoid plagiarism in essay writing
What could be considered as plagiarism?
copied full text (ideas, theories, opinions) or parts of it (more than 2 words in a row) without quotation marks and proper citations
incorrectly paraphrased words
paraphrasing without a citation
facts, pictures, statistics, graphs, drawings (except for common knowledge – e.g. Neil Armstrong was the first human to step on the moon) incorporated from external sources
quoting another person’s spoken or written words without citing them
using previously-submitted work
use of fake references or incorrect citations and/or reference formats
Use quotation marks whenever you copy more than 2 words in a row verbatim.
Provide quotes word by word if you copy them exactly.
Cite a source for any of the ideas, words, phrases, or facts adhering to the required formatting guidelines (MLA, APA, Chicago, etc.). Cite all kinds of material (text, pictures, tables, diagrams, charts, etc.) taken from a printed or web source (an article, a book, website, magazine, newspaper, journal, etc.).
All the data mentioned in a citation (an author’s name, a page’s number, an addition, a date of the publication, etc.) must be actual.
Reference all the used sources. A reference page or page of works cited must be included at the end of work and formatted according to the required format.
Mention only real and genuinely-used sources.
Paraphrase correctly and cite appropriately. Read, understand, and restate material in your own words (not more than 2 words in a row from the original source can be used, otherwise quotation marks are needed). Paraphrasing is not about changing a few words in the original text or replacing them with synonyms, but rather expressing the author’s idea from your personal perspective.
The original source must always be cited while paraphrasing.
